Research Project

Temporal Practices in the American Civil War

In my dissertation project, I examine temporal practices found in and shaping the American Civil War. I focus on the practical use of time by four groups of actors: soldiers, civilians, military institutions, and political leadership.

The goal of the project is to identify the interactions between temporal practices, warfare, and the experience of war. To this end, the following areas will be analyzed: military logistics and time discipline, military time management; political proclamations and mobilization appeals, imposition of martial law; individual temporal practice through diary writing, widespread watch purchase by soldiers, and the constitution of military-civilian time through military mail correspondence. The overarching aim is to analyze the pluritemporality of this war and to map the reciprocal influences of warfare and temporal practices. Thus, this project contributes to the cultural history of war as well as the history of time and temporality.
